Delta Beta Chapter

In the first 20 years of the history of Carnegie Tech, more than ten greek letter organizations were founded on campus. These organizations started as local chapters - some of which joined larger, national organizations. In 1915, a group of men founded the local fraternity Tau Gamma Phi.

By 1923, seven of the local greek letter organizations had become chapters of national organizations. The men of Tau Gamma Phi, wanting to become a part of something greater and larger than the campus of Carnegie Tech, petitioned the national fraternity Delta Tau Delta for membership. On April 7, 1923, Tau Gamma Phi was admitted to Delta Tau Delta and became Delta Beta Chapter.

Delta Beta was active in many aspects of campus life and won acclaim in several areas. From 1942 to 1952, Delta Tau Delta was the undisputed champion of the Sweepstakes races, commonly known as “Buggy” - winning ten of eleven years in a streek interrupted only once by Delta Upsilon in 1947.

In 2004, the Chapter came under review by that national Fraternity. On October 25, 2004, the national board voted to close the chapter. The Chapter was notified of the decision on Oct 31, 2004 and Delta Beta, having lost its charter, closed its doors. From the time of Tau Gamma Phi to the closing of the chapter, 1,194 men had initiated into Delta Tau Delta.

Delta Beta returned to Carnegie Mellon for a fresh start in November of 2008 with the hope of acting as an architect of change for the better. Building from scratch, the new Delta Beta worked hard to set their foundation. Within a year of colonization, Delta Beta was recognized with a Shelter on campus. Only 16 months after colonization, Delta Beta chartered on April 24, 2010 with a membership of 41. While we set out in new directions, it is important for us to remember our past - the trials and triumphs - that we may learn from the successes and failures of our brothers who came before.
