Chapter Installation: Delta Beta Returns

On Saturday, April 24th, 2010, Delta Beta Chapter was rechartered at Carnegie Mellon University. A group of 41 founding fathers were initiated ready to continue the long and proud history of Delta Tau Delta at Carnegie Mellon's campus in Pittsburgh, PA. Brothers from the Gamma Chapter at Washington and Jefferson college served as the initiating chapter, performing the Rite of Iris and Ritual.

Following the ceremonies, brothers and guests attended the celebration banquet. Guests included Jim Russell, Fraternity International Executive Vice President, Jim Garboden, Fraternity International Treasurer, Larry Altenburg, Eastern Division President, Delta Beta alumnus Nick Frollini, Eastern Division President for Ritual and Alumni Mentor, David Sirey, Chapter Leadership Consultant, and Max Schuster, Chapter Advisor. Also in attendance were Holly Hippensteel, CMU Director of Student Life, Monica Bebe, Greek Life Coordinator, Shernell Smith, Student Development Director, along with representatives from CMU's other IFC and panhellenic organizations, and family, friends and Delta Beta alumni. Delta Beta Chapter is pround to have brought Delta Tau Delta back to Carnegie Mellon and looks forward to continued growth and success in the future.

The Spirit of Buggy

Despite many attempts to qualify Bethany for race day, the brothers of Delta Tau Delta were unable to race in this year's Sweepstakes races. For their efforts, however, they were rewarded with the Spirit of Buggy award. Because of their steadfast determination and commitment to buggy through good times and bad, through successful rolls and nerve-wracking crashes, through brisk autumn mornings and frigid winter dawns, the Delts were given the trophy due to the team which best exemplified the spirit of the Sweepstakes races. The brothers look forward to the challenges that come with the fall and hope to qualify for next year's races - bringing Delta Beta back to Buggy from its long retirement.

Petition Accepted! Chapter Installation Date Set

The brothers of Delta Beta had held their breath for weeks after submitting their petition for a charter to the Arch Chapter. Finally, word came and the word was a resounding yes. In celebration, the men of Delta Tau Delta returned to that ancient Carnegie Mellon tradition and took the fence. Not even the icy winter nights could dampen their spirits. Once the news spread, congratulations came from all corners of the Carnegie Mellon Greek Community. Alumni Mentor Nick Frollini made sure to drop by the fence to greet the Delts with congratulations, a knowing smile, and advice that much work awaits Delta Beta still. Preparations for the April 24th reinstallation are already being set into motion.

Greek Sing: Hairspray

This year, the colony partnered with Delta Delta Delta sorority to compete in Greek Sing, winning third place in the doubles category for their rendition of the broadway musical Hairspray. After winning second place in the previous year's Greek Sing singles category, this was the first year DTD participated in the more competitive doubles category. Brothers were excited to work with the sisters of TriDelt, and put in an incredible effort for the one-time performance. Rehearsals with TriDelt started months before the show, as everyone learned the songs and dance moves; brothers also build sets to depict 1960's Baltimore and the set of the Corny Collins TV dance show. The performance went successfully, only marred by technical difficulties that briefly interrupted the show (ironically) during the number "You Can't Stop the Beat" (which was restarted shortly thereafter). Before announcing the winners, the night concluded with a moving video and presentation from a representative of St Jude Children's Hospital, this year's fundraising recipient. The total fundraising amount was also revealed to be a record-breaking $38,000. DTD's Greek Sing effort was led by brothers Tim Hieter '10 and Ben Lee '10. Next year's event will be held the evening of April 2nd, 2011, again at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall.

Division Conference

The Delta Beta Delts were unable to attend this year's Eastern Division Conference due to inclement weather. Ruling on the side of caution, the colony believed it best not to send its leaders and brothers out to Albany, NY during a blizzard that would eventually deposit 2.5 feet of snow on the city of Pittsburgh. Not willing to let the weather get them down, the brothers of Delta Beta, taking advantage of the situation, proceeded to construct a snow fort worthy of the Delta Tau Delta name and defend her honor against waves of attackers. At the 2010 Capital Karnea, the brothers would receive several awards that had been due for presentation at the missed Eastern Division Conference: special recognitions for excellence in the Adopt-A-School program, exceeding the All-Male Average, and exceeding Recruitment Goals.

Spring Recruitment 2010

Remembering that recruitment is the lifeblood of the fraternity, the Delts at Carnegie Mellon held a highly successful Spring Rush (despite inclement weather and minor mishaps comically entitled "Snowmageddon") which resulted in a campus-record-breaking 11 new members.
